What upscaling can and cannot do
It reconstructs detail. It does not add things that were never filmed.
- Soft or low-resolution footage gains real edge detail, not a sharpening halo.
- Compression artifacts are reduced, but heavy blocking in the source still shows through.
- Motion blur stays motion blur — it is in the frame, not a defect to remove.
- The clip's length, framing and timing are untouched. Only the resolution changes.
Choosing a factor
2x is the usual answer; 4x is for genuinely small sources.
1x and 2x cost the same, so there is no reason to pick 1x unless you only want the cleanup. 4x costs more per second and is worth it when the source is small enough that doubling still leaves it short of the delivery resolution — a 480p clip headed for a 1080p timeline, say. Enlarging something already near your target mostly spends money on pixels nobody sees.
How it is billed
Per second of the video you upload.
Upscaling is priced per second of the SOURCE, because enlarging does not change a clip's length. A two-minute clip costs twice a one-minute clip at the same factor, and 4x costs more per second than 2x. The estimate on the form is read from the file before anything is uploaded, so the figure you see is for your actual clip — and it is the same number the account is charged, calculated by the same code that bills it. Images are a flat rate whatever their size.
