Example outputFrom: “Why most home coffee tastes worse than a café
- Your coffee probably isn't bad because of the beans — it's bad because of what happens before the first sip.
- The same coffee can taste incredible at a café and flat at home. Here's the difference.
- If your home coffee tastes bitter, stop blaming the machine.
- Cafés aren't using better beans. They're controlling one thing your kitchen ignores.
- Your morning coffee loses most of its flavour before it reaches the mug.

Why the first line carries the video

Almost all of the drop-off happens before the second sentence.

A hook is not a title and not a summary. It is the first thing said aloud, and its only job is to make the next sentence worth hearing. That means it has to be specific enough to be interesting and incomplete enough to need continuing — which is why generic openers like "today we are going to talk about" fail: they are complete, and they promise nothing.

Getting more out of it

Four things that make the difference.

  • Lead with the claim, not the preamble. The context can come second.
  • Contradict an assumption the viewer already holds — that is what makes them wait for the resolution.
  • Be concrete. A specific number, object or moment beats a general statement.
  • Say it out loud before you commit. If it is hard to say, it is a bad hook.

Using more than one

Five hooks for one idea is deliberate: the same video can be opened several ways, and which one works is genuinely hard to predict. Picking the one you would most want to hear is a better test than choosing the cleverest.
